Class 11 Maths is challenging for several students. But with the right strategy and consistent practice throughout the academic year, one can easily ace the Maths exam. Maths indeed is either a game maker or a game-breaker. Either you know how to solve a particular question or you don’t know how to. Half-hearted Maths preparation must be avoided if you aim to secure the highest marks in the Maths exam.
Preparation for the Maths exam should be simplified by focussing and devoting more time to the most important topics in the syllabus. There are certain topics from every chapter from which more questions appear in the exam. So, you must study Maths smartly. You should first, aim to cover those portions and important questions of the syllabus which have a higher marks weightage. Follow the tips listed below to succeed in the Class 11 Maths exam-
1. Prepare a Study Plan
Divide the entire syllabus into 3 parts- topics that you know very well, topics you need to improve on, and topics that you have never studied before. This will simplify your preparation and bring more clarity about the portions that need to be covered first. Pay more attention to topics that you are weak at and the untouched topics. In the meanwhile, keep revising your strong topics regularly. Keep a track of your progress by maintaining a checklist and update it from time to time.
2. Prepare Quick Revision Notes
Save yourself from last-minute confusion and stress by preparing short Mathematics revision notes beforehand. These notes should cover all the major formulae, theorems, and concepts from every chapter. List down all the topics in a particular chapter. It will prevent you from forgetting to revise one of the topics. It will also give you an overview of the entire chapter and enable you to revise more in less time.
3. Solve Previous Year Questions and Sample Papers
Your Maths preparation is incomplete without practicing the previous years’ questions. These questions give an indication of how well prepared you are for the exams. The more questions you practice, the better you will perform on the day. Giving timed tests will help you manage time on the final exam day. So, practice, practice, and practice some more Maths questions!
4. Read the Question Paper Carefully
On the day of the exam, read the Maths question paper carefully. Attempt the questions to find easy first. Then, move on to the doubtful and challenging questions. Don’t spend too much time on a single question to complete the Maths exam on time. If you get stuck while solving a question, skip it for the time being and revisit it after attempting the other questions. Manage your time well. Complete your exam at least 15 minutes before to get enough time for revising your answer sheet.
5. Important Topics in NCERT Class 11, Maths
- From the chapter on Sets, the important concepts are Subset, Superset, and Powerset. You must thoroughly practice questions from the topic on Union and Intersection of Set.
- In Relations and Functions, have a command on topics such as the Cartesian Product of Sets, the concept of Relations, and the Real-Valued Functions.
- From the Trigonometric Functions chapter, thoroughly prepare the following topics- Signs of Trigonometric Functions, Trigonometric Functions and their Graphs, Trigonometric Identities, and the Trigonometric Equations.
- The questions from the Principle of Mathematical Induction appear directly in the exam from the NCERT. Have command over all the solved examples and the Exercise questions from this chapter.
- Under Complex Numbers and Quadratic Equations, pay special attention to these topics- Modulus and Conjugate of a Complex Number and Polar Representation of Complex numbers.
- Have a stronghold on the General and Middle Term of a Binomial Expansion from Binomial Theorem.
- The important topics from the chapter- Permutations and Combinations are Permutations when objects are distinct, Permutations when objects are not distinct and the Problems on Combination.
- In Linear Inequalities, more questions appear from the topics- Linear Equations in one variable and Problems on a system of linear equations in two variables.
- Under Sequences and Series, practice questions on Sum of n terms of an Arithmetic progression, Properties of Arithmetic Progressions and Arithmetic Mean, and the Geometric Progressions (Sum of n terms of GP) nth term.
- The most important portions to be studied from Straight Lines are- Point Slope and 2 Point form of the straight line, Slope-Intercept Form of the straight line, The Angle between 2 lines, Intercept form of straight lines, The distance of a point from a line and distance between 2 parallel lines, and Normal form of straight lines.
- In Conic Sections, the major topics are Parabola, Hyperbola, Ellipse, and Circle. Practice abundant questions from each of these topics.
- Under Introduction to 3-D Geometry, practice more questions from Distance between 2 points in 3-D Space and the Section formula.
- From Limits and Derivatives, the most important topics from an examination point of view are the Limit of a Polynomial and a Rational function, Limit of a trigonometric function, Derivative of a function, and Derivative of Trigonometric and Polynomial Functions.
- From Mathematical Reasoning, focus more on the following topics- Implications, Negation of statement, Validity of ‘If and only if’ and ‘If-then’ statements, and Validation of a statement by the method of contradiction.
- Under the chapter on Statistics, prepare the following topics well- Mean deviation for CFD (Continuous Frequency Distribution) and the Variance and standard deviation of CFD (continuous frequency distribution).
- And, lastly, from the chapter, Probability, the important concepts are Finding probability using the complement of a known event, Probability of an event, Algebra of events, and mutually exclusive and exhaustive events.
